Phonics at Romiley Primary School
Monster Phonics
In Romiley Primary School we use the Monster Phonics scheme alongside our own Phonics teaching from Letters and Sounds. The scheme is a whole-class Systematic Synthetic Phonics Scheme for children in Reception and Key Stage 1. It is also used as a ’keep up’ intervention in Key Stages 1 and 2.
The scheme encourages the children to have a positive attitude to their learning as they love the characters who introduce the new sounds in a child friendly way. Each sound is colour coded with a character who supports the children as they work building resilience in a structured way. This helps the children to commit these phonemes, graphemes and spelling patterns to long term memory and in turn equips our children with the ability to phonetically decode and to have spelling strategies later on.
Information and website
‘Monster Phonics teaches children to read by enabling them to identify the individual graphemes (letter combinations) and blend the sounds (phonemes) together to read the word. Sounds are categorised into ten colour groups, and each colour has a corresponding monster. This creates interest and engagement from the children.’
Here is a link to introduce the characters if you wish to support your child at home. Each character has an action alongside the colour coding.
